When adult children turn 26, they must find new health insurance as they age out of their parents’ plans. The rules vary widely, making professional advice essential. Here’s how Healthcare Pathfinder (HCP) helped a client through this transition.

The Challenge

A client needed help transitioning her twin daughters, Liz and Joan, off their parents’ insurance as they turned 26. Both were covered under their father’s New York employer plan with excellent benefits and a national provider network,  but were no longer eligible once they turned 26.

  1. Assessing Coverage End Date: HCP determined the exact end date of their coverage, which can vary by employer and plan type.  Either before their 26th birthday or until the end of the year.
  2. Researching Plan Options:
    • Joan: Living in New York and employed by a large company was able to easily transition to her employer’s benefits.
    • Liz: Living in California, self-employed, and with significant health issues faced more challenges. HCP advised her parents to check if Liz could be eligible to extend her coverage until she turned 29 under New York state law or if she could be eligible for COBRA. Although the state extension wasn’t an option due to her residence in California, Liz was eligible for 36 months of COBRA coverage, maintaining her current benefits at full premium cost, which her parents were willing to help pay.
  3. Facilitating COBRA Transition: HCP assisted Liz with her COBRA transition, ensuring she retained her excellent coverage and medical care in California.

Outcome

Thanks to HCP’s guidance, Liz and her parents secured continued coverage without disruption. Joan successfully moved to her employer’s plan, while Liz transitioned seamlessly to COBRA, providing peace of mind and stability.
